In response to an act of the Virginia General Assembly stating that area funeral homes could not provide private ambulance services, Addison Hall the then Captain of Middlesex County Volunteer Rescue Squad in Deltaville taught an Advanced First Aid class in Urbanna during fall 1968. At the end of the class the 14 students and Dr. Van Name were admitted to membership of the Middlesex County Volunteer Rescue Squad as the "Urbanna Division". Service began on December 23, 1968.
In October 8, 1969 the Commonwealth of Virginia State Corporation Commission issued a Certificate of Incorporation to the Central Middlesex Volunteer Rescue Squad, Inc., and on October 23, 1969 the Virginia Department of Health issued an Emergency Medical Services Permit to the same. CMVRS has been in constant service to the citizens of Middlesex County and the surrounding areas since that time.
Originally housed in the Middlesex Volunteer Fire Department building on Virginia street, the squad moved to it's current location on Hilliard St. in 2004.
